OUTWISE – learning from the best in Europe to develop outdoor education in Estonia!

This summer, the Tartu Nature House team has started the Nordplus Horizontal project OUTWISE – Outdoor Learning for Wellbeing , Inclusion and Sustainability in Education (NPHZ-2026/10079), which aims to develop outdoor learning in a way that supports learners’ well-being, inclusion and a sustainable mindset.

In early June, we participated in the international Ulos-Ut-Out 2026 conference in Tampere, Finland , where we gathered inspiration, new methodologies and met with project partners. On Midsummer’s Eve, work continued in Norway, where we participated in the 11th International Outdoor Education Research Conference (IOERC) and learned about the latest international research and practices in the field of outdoor education.

Over the next few months, we will collect, test and adapt the best outdoor learning methods in Estonia, Finland and Norway. Based on these, a practical training program will be developed for educators in Estonia, Finland and Norway, the modules of which will be available for teachers and youth workers to complete for the first time in practice during the Tartu Nature House Outdoor Learning Week in the spring of 2027.

We thank the Nordplus Horizontal program for its support, which allows us to learn from international partners and bring the latest knowledge to Estonian education.

The project is led by Tartu Nature House, and the partners are the Finnish Network of Nature and Environmental Schools (LYKE) , the Norwegian Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE Norway) , and the Norwegian University of Sport Sciences (NIH) .
